Who is José Antonio Kast, the far-right leader elected president of Chile?

José Antonio Kast Rist, a Chilean politician of German descent, is 59 years old. He was born on January 18, 1966, in Santiago and is the youngest of ten siblings. He began his political career at the Catholic University of Chile (UC) with the student movement, where he came into contact with influential figures such as Jaime Guzmán, who founded the traditional right-wing Independent Democratic Union (UDI) party, of which Kast was a member for almost two decades. Kast triumphed this Sunday, December 14: in the runoff election against the ruling party's candidate, Jeannette Jara, of the Communist Party, he won the presidency of the South American country. In that place, he maintained that he would "restore greatness to Chile" and that this time he would win the presidential elections, in contrast to the 2021 elections, in which he was defeated by Gabriel Boric (progressive left), and those of 2017, when he was defeated by Sebastián Piñera (traditional right).
