The U.S. suspends the "visa lottery," which allows immigrants to obtain green cards.
According to Kristi Noem, Secretary of Homeland Security, the U.S. immigration agency was instructed to discontinue its Diversity Visa (DV1) program, also known as the "visa lottery," after discovering that the suspected perpetrator of the Brown University shooting had entered the country through it. As Noem reported in X on Thursday night, Claudio Valente entered the United States in 2017 through the Diversity Visa Lottery and was granted a green card. "This despicable individual should never have been admitted to our nation," she added. "As directed by President Trump, I am instructing USCIS to immediately cease the DV1 program to ensure that no more Americans are harmed by this disastrous program," she added. The suspect, Valente, who died, was 48 years old and a Portuguese national. He had been a student at Brown University.
