The recent prison crisis in Ecuador that resulted in 27 inmates being hanged over the weekend

In Ecuador, prisons have once again become a scene of terror and death: at least 31 inmates lost their lives and another 34 were injured in two riots that occurred in a prison over the weekend. Of the dead, 27 were executed by hanging. According to the National Service for Comprehensive Care for Adults Deprived of Liberty and Adolescent Offenders (SNAI), the riots took place in the Machala prison, located in the south of the country. This incident follows what happened on November 1st, when 12 prisoners were found dead in three other prisons in Ecuador. And these are not isolated incidents: since 2021, around 500 deaths have been documented in Ecuadorian prisons.
