The Italian government has given final approval to a plan to build the longest
The Italian government has given final approval to a plan to build the longest suspension bridge in the world, which will connect the Calabria region with the island of Sicily, in the southernmost part of Italy. The project has a total cost of US$15.6 billion. The developers of the bridge, which will be built in one of the most seismically active areas of the Mediterranean, claim it will be able to withstand earthquakes. This is the latest attempt by Italian authorities to carry out the construction of the Messina bridge. Plans have since been scrapped due to concerns about cost, safety, environmental damage, or possible interference from the mafia. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni acknowledged that the project has been difficult.
