The diplomatic conflict between Peru and Colombia
The diplomatic conflict between Peru and Colombia is escalating over the island of Santa Rosa de Loreto, located on the border between the two nations. Gustavo Petro, the president of Colombia, alleged that Peru unilaterally annexed this territory after passing a law converting it into a district within the Loreto region. According to him, this action violates existing border treaties and jeopardizes Leticia's access to the Amazon River. According to the president, Colombia maintains that the island emerged after the agreements of the 1920s; therefore, its sovereignty should be established through binational pacts. In response, the Peruvian government asserted that the island was assigned to Peru in accordance with the Rio de Janeiro Protocol and the Solomon-Lozano Treaty (1922). During the official visit, a Colombian military aircraft was spotted flying over the district of Santa Rosa. According to Canal N reports, the aircraft remained in Colombian airspace for approximately 30 minutes, performing various maneuvers over the area the Colombian government considers its own.
