The Close Relationship Between Peru and Russia and the Military Center

In recent years, military collaboration between Peru and Russia has notably increased, marked by the creation of specialized maintenance centers. Rosoboronexport has revealed its intention to set up a helicopter maintenance and repair facility in Peru, which will enhance the operational capabilities of the Peruvian armed forces. This strategic partnership has deep roots, originating from the second meeting of the Russian-Peruvian Intergovernmental Commission on Military-Technical Cooperation, established through an agreement signed in 2004. Peru aims to create strategic alliances in the military industry that yield mutual benefits for both nations. The center was established as part of a deal made in December 2013 for the supply of 24 Mi-171Sh-P helicopters from Russia to Peru, operating as the largest maintenance hub for Russian helicopters in Latin America. Located in Arequipa, this center caters not only to Peruvian needs but also offers services to the entire Latin American region, including Venezuela. The relationship goes beyond mere commerce, symbolizing a geopolitical alliance that diversifies the sources of Peru's military equipment while decreasing reliance on traditional Western suppliers.
