The Argentine government's privatization spree begins next Friday.
It will open bids for four hydroelectric plants in the Comahue region. It hopes to raise approximately $600 million. The list goes on. The national government's privatization cycle begins this Friday with the opening of bids for four hydroelectric plants in the Comahue area. At the end of November, it will do the same for Routes 12 and 14. Simultaneously, the bidding terms for the Belgrano Cargas railway will be issued. And at the beginning of December, the bidding process for the Paraná-Paraguay Waterway and a new group of national highways will begin. At the beginning of 2026, the selling spree will continue with another round of national highways, Transener, and the completion of the Paraná-Paraguay Waterway process. The Casa Rosada (Presidential Palace) hopes that next year it will be able to sell the Argentine Postal Service, Aysa (the water utility), and Nucleoeléctrica Argentina (NASA, the company in charge of nuclear power plants). According to the national government, privatizations will generate approximately $5 billion. The secret to the new frenetic pace lies precisely in this amount deposited in the Treasury coffers, allowing the government to pay some of the following year's external debt obligations through fiscal accounts, without needing to take out new loans or negotiate a debt swap. The Casa Rosada (the presidential palace) is seeking to accelerate privatizations to divest itself of companies with operating deficits. Although the management of the 32 state-owned companies generated a considerable surplus in the first half of 2025, exceeding $106 billion, Enarsa and Trenes Argentinos (Argentine Trains) are the ones with the largest deficits.
