Sheinbaum eases tensions with China over tariffs: "These are not coercive actions; we seek a good relationship."
Next week, Mexican officials will meet with representatives from the Asian country to discuss the 50% tariffs Mexico wants to impose on its automobiles and other products. Lin Jian, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated this Thursday that the country "resolutely opposes any coercion that attempts to impose limitations under various pretexts," and maintained that such actions by the Mexican government harm its legitimate rights and interests. Sheinbaum has responded quickly to avoid the possibility of a rupture with the Asian country and has anticipated that, in the following week, a Mexican delegation will meet with Chinese officials to discuss the measure. The president has emphasized, amid the controversy, that the tariffs will apply to all nations with which Mexico does not have trade agreements, including China; this is not a decision directed at any specific government.
