Putin dismisses Trump's emissaries and focuses his attention on a geopolitical victory.
Russian President Vladimir Putin relishes the idea of being begged to accept a deal, because he doesn't want one. The five-hour meeting between President Donald Trump's envoy and son-in-law and the Kremlin leader didn't seem to yield many public results. It's convenient to distance oneself and observe the world and Russia's encroachment from his perspective. But then came the gift of Trump's second term, along with his wavering admiration (or sympathy) for Putin and his yearning for peace at almost any price. Putin doesn't face elections; the only possible constraint on his rule is his natural lifespan. When Trump claims he's not interested in spending money on the war in Ukraine and just wants it to end, the fragility and lack of interest from the world's most militarily powerful nation is palpable. The former KGB spy probably never imagined the United States would be begging Russia for peace. This is their opportunity. And the longer the process drags on, the better the outcome will likely be for Moscow
