Protests erupt in Iran as the currency plummets to an all-time low.
Following the resignation of the Central Bank president and the collapse of the Iranian currency to a record low against the dollar, the largest protests in Iran in three years began on Monday. The resignation of Mohammad Reza Farzin coincided with demonstrations by shopkeepers and merchants along Saadi and Shush streets in central Tehran, near the Grand Bazaar. Market vendors played a pivotal role in the 1979 Islamic Revolution, which overthrew the monarchy and brought Islamists to power. Similar protests were reported in other major cities, including Mashhad in the northeast, Shiraz in the south, and Isfahan in central Iran.
