Pedro Castillo, the former leftist president of Peru (2021-2022), was sentenced this Thursday to 11 years, 5 months, and 15 days in prison for conspiring to rebellion,

following the failed coup he led on December 7, 2022. On the day of the coup, Castillo announced to the nation that he would temporarily dissolve Congress (Parliament), intervene in the judiciary, and govern by decree. This occurred after a motion in the opposition-controlled legislature to impeach him following the revelation of evidence of alleged corruption directly implicating him.
