Jerí does not rule out entering the Mexican Embassy to arrest Betssy Chávez, former minister under Pedro Castillo, who is accused of a failed coup attempt.
Peru's interim president, José Jerí, declared that if it is necessary to enter the Mexican Embassy in Lima to arrest Chávez, he will do so. "If it is necessary to enter the Mexican embassy, we will do it," Jerí said in an interview published this Sunday in El Comercio. Chávez has been in the Mexican embassy for nearly three weeks, a country that has granted her political asylum. Since her arrival at the embassy, she has been waiting for Peru to issue a safe-conduct pass that would allow her to travel there. “We are not going to make a statement yet, as we believe a principle has been misrepresented, and of course, as a nation, we must express our discomfort with the misuse of political asylum. It is neither a yes nor a no to safe passage. Regarding this matter, Jerí stated: “I am going to take my time, as there are international commitments that we have and that we will fulfill in due course.” However, last Friday the judge ordered Chávez’s preventive detention and international arrest for five months, considering that there was a “palpable danger” that this leftist politician would flee the process due to his absence from court hearings and biometric registration.
