Jerí defends himself against questions about his meeting with a businessman: "I haven't deceived the country."
Since 2018, Jerí has been the seventh president of Peru. He took office three months ago after Congress impeached President Dina Boluarte, and he assumed leadership of the legislature. After a local television program broadcast photos of President Jerí entering a Chinese businessman's restaurant wearing a hood, questions began to arise about him. Jerí met with the businessman and apologized for "generating suspicion" in a video posted on the Peruvian Presidency's official account over the weekend. He also denied any wrongdoing. A preliminary investigation into the matter was conducted to determine if members of Congress could request his censure or removal from office. He guaranteed that he is prepared to provide information from his mobile phone if requested by the Prosecutor's Office. "As I announced, I will facilitate the lifting of the secrecy surrounding my communications related to my cell phone," he said.
