In Peru, due to rising insecurity, presidential candidates will receive bulletproof vests.

Given the persistent climate of insecurity and recent attacks on pre-candidates, the electoral authority plans to provide bulletproof vests to its officials and candidates. In October, Phillip Butters, the right-wing candidate, escaped a hail of stones under the protection of police officers with plastic shields. Liberal candidate Rafael Belaúnde, another pre-candidate, escaped unharmed from several shots fired by unknown assailants while he was driving his vehicle. Lawyer Percy Ipanaqué, of the left-wing party Together for Peru, who intended to run for Congress, was allegedly shot and killed by hitmen. In a country suffering from a wave of crime and extortion, the president of the National Elections Board, Roberto Burneo, asked the government to expedite electoral security protocols following Tuesday's terrorist attack. The official fears that attacks in 2026 will surpass the "nearly 50 violent events" that occurred during the 2021 elections.
