Chancay-Shanghai Maritime Route - $3.5 Billion Investment
Chancay-Shanghai Maritime Route - $3.5 Billion Investment The Chancay megaport in Peru represents a historic investment of $3.4-$3.6 billion that is transforming maritime trade between Latin America and Asia. The first phase, inaugurated in November 2024, required an investment of $1.315 billion and establishes a direct route with Shanghai, significantly reducing transportation times. The new maritime route reduces the average transportation time for goods from Peru to Asia from 40 to 28 days, while containerized goods from Asia arrive in Peru in 25 days. This efficiency makes Chancay a strategic hub for all of South America, subsequently connecting with Ecuador, Colombia, and Chile via feeder vessels. With 15 deepwater berths and the capacity to receive deep-draft vessels, the port is positioned as one of the most advanced terminals in the world. In its first months of operation, the route has transported 22,000 tons worth $84 million, demonstrating its commercial potential and consolidating China's presence in South American trade.
